Fall Like A Rose Petal
For the happynesswalas™, Fall Like A Rose Petal , and its Tamil translation, Uthirum Roja Ithazh Pola, are spiritual offerings – from them to anyone who is willing to pause and reflect on Life.
Fall Like A Rose Petal is a spiritual journey. It is the true story of Vaani and AVIS’ Life. It captures learnings from the extremely painful, yet fascinating, Life-changing experience – a crippling bankruptcy – that they are still going through.
The book chronicles Vaani and AVIS’ journey in the initial six-odd years (2007 to 2013) of their enduring bankruptcy. While doing this, it explores the suchness of Life. There is no typical, predictable beginning to the story. There is no end either. There are simply experiences: Of hopelessness. Of fear. Of insolvency. Of pennilessness. And also of faith, patience, love, companionship, abundance and soul. Of integrity and of leading a principled Life, despite temptations to take the easy way out of painful or messy situations. In this book, AVIS shares how he and Vaani have learned to be happy despite their circumstances. The book has been written in the form of letters from AVIS to their two children.
Importantly, Fall Like A Rose Petal was born out of Vaani and AVIS’ philosophy to be useful even when they were not successful. It reflects their idea of employing their pain to serve a higher purpose – of Inspiring ‘Happyness’™! The couple hope that readers of the book are able to relate to the Life lessons it contains and are able to use them to live fuller, meaningful, happy lives.
There’s an interesting story behind why Fall Like A Rose Petal is named so. Read about it here (2-minute read) or watch a video on it here (viewing time: 6.54 minutes). Fall Like A Rose Petal was first published by Westland in August 2014. The publishing rights are currently owned by Vaani and AVIS.
The Tamil translation
In 2017, legendary Tamil writer Charukesi reached out to AVIS, offering to translate Fall Like A Rose Petal: “This is a story that must reach many more people, AVIS. Let me do this for you and Vaani.”
Acclaimed writer and Tamil literary icon Sivasankari, while writing the foreword to the translated work, told Vaani and AVIS: “The essence of ‘Fall Like A Rose Petal’ can be captured in Tamil only with the title ‘Uthirum Roja Ithazh Pola’.” Charukesi too loved the title. And so it stayed.
Serendipitously, the legendary entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr. Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti came forward to sponsor the book’s first print run. It so happened that Charukesi passed away in January 2019. At an event got together to celebrate Charukesi’s memory in February 2019, noted writer V. Ramnarayan referred to Uthirum Roja Ithazh Pola as Charukesi’s last work. Hearing this, and noting that that the book was awaiting a publisher, Nalli, spontaneously, compassionately, offered to support the work. And that’s how, miraculously, just as everything else in Vaani and AVIS’ Life has happened, Uthirum Roja Ithazh Pola was launched in October 2019. Speaking at the launch, Nalli said, “After Gandhi’s ‘My Experiments With Truth’, this is the most honest book I have read in all my life!”
